The 2016 was a remarkable one for the orchestra: it stepped over a ten-year milestone! The anniversary concert held on January 25 at the Aram Khachaturian Concert Hall was attended by Maestro Krzysztof Penderecki himself. The orchestra performed also with such famous musicians as violinists Haik Kazazyan and Yuka Tsuboi, cellists Astrig Siranosyan and Narek Hakhnazaryan, pianist Alexander Romanovsky, accordion / bandoneon player Mario Stefano Pietrodarchi. The year was marked by the large-scale projects, unique concerts and great success in the international arena! Having the performance and promotion of the Armenian composers' art as its mission, the State Youth Orchestra of Armenia launched the year with the traditional Armenian Composers' Art Festival, this time entitled "Mirzoyan-Fest". The Fest hosted numerous famous musicians, including world-renowned violinist Sergey Khachatryan. This was followed by the participation in “Al Bustan” International Festival (Lebanon, Beirut). By the way, three years in a row SYOA has served as an official orchestra of this internationally acclaimed event. Not only the concerts of SYOA but also its ensemble - the Alexander Aroutiunian Woodwind-Piano Quartet took place within the framework of the festival. Moreover, the same year the quartet toured also to China. On April 24, 2016 the orchestra performed during the "Aurora" global humanitarian award ceremony. In 2006 by the initiative of the Youth Orchestra the Aram Khachaturian International Conducting Competition was held for the first time. Taking into consideration the lack of conducting competitions in the world and the total absence of the latters in our region, we decided to provide a platform for self impression also to the young talented conductors. The next grand project initiated by our leader Sergey Smbatyan was entitled "Generation of Independence". The All Armenian Choir and Orchestra "Generation of Independence" united numerous talented young musicians from different regions of Armenia and Artsakh around a single event. Held on September 21 at the Karen Demirchyan Sports and Concerts Complex the unique concert brought together on the same stage 1144 Armenian musicians - the representatives of the generation of independence who performed pieces by the Armenian composers of different periods. The autumn was rich in Khachaturian music: for the 4th time Yerevan welcomed the 2-month-long Khachaturian International Festival. During 2016 the Youth Orchestra presented two more ensembles – the Sarian String Quartet and the Otri Trio, both comprised of the leading musicians of the orchestra. The year was concluded by the highly anticipated Cartoon Non-Stop project. And, in the end, we entered the new year with а successful tour to China!
