A press conference dedicated to the 1st ”Armenia” International Festival and Competition took place on July 11, 2017. The Artistic Director of the ”Armenia” International Festival and Competition Sergey Smbatyan and famous violinist, Maxim Vengerov, who won the Grammy award twice summed up the festival and competition. On July 12 Vengerov will perform with the State Youth Orchestra of Armenia at Aram Khachaturian Concert Hall.
Maxim Vengerov noted that there have been lots of musical festivals, but ”Armenia” International Festival and Competition is unique. ”There are lots of festivals in the world, but a festival-competition format is special for the young performers. I am glad for my participation”. Vengerov added that he had heard about the ”Armenia” International Festival and Competition in different countries (France, Germany) and from various sources and it is a great pleasure for him to be part of this festival.
Vengerov noted that it is always great honor to visit and perform in Armenia. ”I am glad to communicate with such a musician as my dear friend Sergey Smbatyan. He is full of new ideas. It’s a real miracle what Sergey Smbatyan has done with the Youth Orchestra. I remember when I conducted the Youth Orchestra, I took with me their enthusiasm, sincerity which was in every note”.
Answering to the question of the journalist Vengerov added that he was going to learn Violin concerto by Khachaturian. ”Some years ago I tried to learn it, but for some reason it was out of the program. Everything is ahead, as Violin Concerto by Khachaturian is among Top 10 compositions for the violin”.
The violinist presented the program of the July 12 concert. The orchestra will present compositions by Claude Debussy, Johannes Brahms, Alexey Shor. Vengerov said that he had performed Violin concerto by Brahms more than 30 times. But it’s a piece that makes you discover new layers each time you perform it.
Referring to the composition by Alexey Shor, Vengerov noted: ”Amazing music, very melodic. I think the audience will enjoy it!”.
The Artistic Director of the festival and competition Sergey Smbatyan added that 48 pianists from 14 countries has participated in the competition, which is a success for the 1st competition. ”Musicians from all over the world come here with a strong belief there is an objective platform for self-expression. This is very valuable”. He added that this is the second international festival in Armenia. And the first one is Khachaturian International Competition. ”This is our victory! We managed to organize another international competition festival in Armenia, with the support of the influential world-renowned artists”,-Smbatyan noted adding that it is a great success that Maxim Vengerov participates in the festival.
The organizers of the 1st “Armenia” International Festival and Competition are the State Youth Orchestra of Armenia and European Foundation for Support of Culture. It is held with the support of RA Ministry of Culture. The event is held under the high patronage of the first lady of the RA Rita Sargsyan.
