The State Youth Orchestra of Armenia will have a concert in Moscow

The Russian Federation is hosting the Days of the Armenian culture from November 14 to November 24. The Days are organized within the framework of the cooperation program 2016-2018 between RA and RF. Many collectives from Armenia will perform in the different cities of the RF, the exhibitions will be organized. On November 18 the Great Hall of the Moscow State Tchaikovsky Conservatory will host a concert entitled “The language of communication: Music”. The State Youth Orchestra of Armenia will perform headed by its Artistic Director and Principal Conductor Sergey Smbatyan, conductors Eduard Topchjan and Constantine Orbelian. Narek Hakhnazaryan (cello), Gevorg Hakobyan (baritone), Hasmik Torosyan (soprano), Suranush Gasparyan (soprano), Mihran Aghajanyan (tenor) will perform as soloists. The orchestra will present compositions by Armenian and Russian composers: Alexander Arutiunian, Barsegh Kanachyan, Tigran Tchoukhajian, Avet Terteryan, Arno Babajanyan, Aram Khachaturian, Pyotr Tchaikovsky, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov. The People’s Artist of the USSR, conductor Vladimir Spivakov is the honorable guest of the concert. The hosts of the evening are Sati Spivakova and Garik Martirosyan.

David Nebel touched the Armenian audience with the wonderful performance of Krunk by Komitas

On November 9 the 5th Khachaturian International Festival hosted famous Swiss violinist David Nebel. The musician and the State Youth Orchestra of Armenia performed Violin Concerto by Ludwig van Beethoven, one of the best compositions of European classical music. Nebel also surprised the Armenian audience presenting Krunk (The Craine) by Komitas. “When I realized that I will be visiting Armenia I was searching for something to present. I heard this composition by Komitas and wanted to perform it. This is a unique piece!”,-Nebel noted. David Nebel was impressed by the cooperation with the State Youth Orchestra of Armenia. “Amazing audience! I was very excited to perform. I had good time in Armenia with amazing musicians and fantastic conductor. Sergey Smbatyan is fantastic conductor. Nowadays it’s hard to find someone like him. He is unique; it was pleasure and honor to perform with him. And the orchestra was absolutely fantastic! I would like to perform with them again!”,-Nebel noted. The musician added that he had known about the Khachaturian Festival before coming here, as many of his friends performed within the framework of the festival. He also added that Khachaturian is very famous in Switzerland, Europe and he had performed Violin Concerto by Khachaturian. The SYOA, headed by conductor Sergey Smbatyan also presented Symphony No.6 “Pathetique” by Pyotr Tchaikovsky during the evening. This is Tchaikovsky’s last symphony. “Khachaturian meets jazz” is a project of international standards and should be presented all over the world

On November 7 “Khachaturian meets jazz” project was presented within the framework of the 5th Khachaturian International Festival. The State Youth Orchestra of Armenia and Armenian State Jazz Band performed jazz arrangements of Aram Khachaturian’s compositions. The arrangements were made by Vahagn Hayrapetyan, Armen Hyusnunts, Martin Ulikhanyan and Andranik Berberyan. Vahagn Hayrapetyan (piano) and Armen Hyusnunts (saxophone) performed as soloists. The orchestras performed under the direction of conductors Sergey Smbatyan and Armen Hyusnunts. The author of the idea, the Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of the SYOA Sergey Smbatyan noted that when they started the project they were thinking about how the audience will perceive the fusion of the Khachaturian’s music and jazz. However, in cooperation with our best jazz musicians, the idea was realized and was loved by the audience. “This is an important project with international standards. Khachaturian’s music has inspired many popular jazz musicians and we reserve the right to perform his music in a jazz format. And we maintained the principles of the academic formality”,-Sergey Smbatyan noted. Conductor Armen Hyusnunc added that Khachaturian’s music has been created on national basis. And if there is clear national basis, there must be jazz. So the idea and the jazz approach are justified! The State Youth Orchestra of Armenia performed during the concert of the duduk player Kamo Seyranyan. On November 5 Karen Demirchyan Sports and Concerts Complex hosted the concert of the duduk player Kamo Seyranyan. Forbidden Saints group and many world famous musicians arrived in Armenia to participate in the concert. Hover State Chamber Choir, the ballet group of the A. Spendiaryan National Academic Theatre of Opera and Ballet, Berd Dance Ensemble and the best masters of folk instruments performed for the public. The State Youth Orchestra of Armenia, headed by its Artistic Director and Principal Conductor Sergey Smbatyan, performed familiar and popular compositions, revealing new colors in the music. Gloria Campaner: “It’s good to work with professional musicians from whom you can learn something”

On October 26 the State Youth Orchestra of Armenia and Italian pianist Gloria Campaner presented Piano Concerto No.2 by Sergei Rachmaninoff within the framework of the 5th Khachaturian International Festival. This composition was written on the threshold of the 20th century, in 1900, and was first performed by the author in Moscow on October 27, 1901. The Piano Concerto No.2 is considered as the beginning of the new stage in Rachmaninoff ‘s creative life. The concerto is one of the most famous compositions and is part of the world’s leading pianist’s repertoire. It was performed and recorded by the author, later by Vladimir Horowitz, Sviatoslav Richter, Arthur Rubinstein, Denis Matsuev, Boris Berezovsky and others. The Armenian audience had a chance to enjoy the composition, which was comprised of three movements. One of the most interesting young pianists of the Italian new generation Gloria Campaner performed it for the audience. The pianist noted that this concerto was the first composition she performed when she was young. She has dreamed of presenting it since childhood, and the dream came true when she was 15. This is not the first cooperation between the pianist and the SYOA. “We performed with the Youth Orchestra during Al Bustan festival in Beirut. I have played with my friends. The 5th Khachaturian International Festival continues to present exceptional evenings to the audience. On October 19 the Armenian premiere of the Orca Symphony No. 1 by American-Armenian rock musician, composer Serj Tankian took place at Aram Khachaturian Concert Hall. All the seats in the hall were occupied. In the four-movement composition Tankian talks about the humanity, comparing the orca – the killer whale with people. The symphony presents the conflict between the good and bad sides of the humanity, difficult trials and the victory of the light. Tankian’s symphony was received with applause and ovations. Тhe composer appeared on the stagе to thank the orchestra. “It is amazing that my symphony has been presented in Armenia by this amazing young people. Frankly speaking I am amazed, impressed and excited. I want to thank the State Youth Orchestra and Sergey Smbatyan. You did fantastic job! This is awesome! Thank you! Serj Tankian: “SYOA performs very well!”

On October 17 Armenian-American rock singer and composer Serj Tankian attended the rehearsal of the State Youth Orchestra of Armenia. On October 19 the orchestra, headed by its Artistic Director and Principal Conductor Sergey Smbatyan, will present Tankian’s Orca Symphony No. 1. Tankian was very impressed by the rehearsal and the way the orchestra performed his composition. “The State Youth Orchestra of Armenia performs very well. I am very excited! I did some corrections during the rehearsal. It is a common thing for the composer to do so. I am very excited to be part of Khachaturian Festival and to see the orchestra”,-world famous Serj Tankian noted after the rehearsal. Orca Symphony No. 1 is presented in Armenia for the first time. The Armenian audience will have a chance to get acquainted with hard rock, alternative metal, art rock, folk rock artist Serj Tankian’s symphony. The Armenian audience will have a chance to get acquainted with hard rock, alternative metal, art rock, folk rock artist Serj Tankian’s symphony. Tankian noted that it’s an honor for him that the State Youth Orchestra of Armenia will perform his Orca Symphony within the framework of the Khachaturian International Festival. Orca Symphony No. 1 was recorded on October, 2012 in Austria, Linz. The symphony was released on June 25, 2013 as an album. The Brass Ensemble of the Youth Orchestra had a unique concert within the framework of the Khachaturian Festival

On October 13 Komitas Chamber Music House hosted a chamber music evening within the framework of the 5th Khachaturian International Festival. The Brass Ensemble of the State Youth Orchestra performed for the public. The concert was a unique one, as the brass ensembles don’t often perform for the audience. The SYOA musician Garegin Ghazaryan (horn) noted that they have created an unusual combination of brass instruments and they are trying to present the music with the unique format. According to Garegin Ghazaryan there are not so many pieces composed for the brass ensembles. During the concert the musicians presented compositions both written for the brass instruments and the arrangements. Compositions by Dmitri Shostakovich, Jean Sibelius, Richard Wagner, Martin Ulikhanyan, Thad Jones were presented. Compositions by foreign composers for the brass quintet were also performed. The 5th Khachaturian International Festival, dedicated to the 200th anniversary of Hovhannes Aivazovsky, will present symphony and chamber concerts. The organizers of the festival provide invitations to the students of musical schools, military educational institutions, giving the opportunity to enjoy the concerts. The students of Monte Melkonian Military-Training School enjoyed performances of the Brass Ensemble at the Chamber Music House. John Malkovich presented excerpt from the “Book of Lamentations”: the Khachaturian festival launched with a unique concert

The 5th Khachaturian International Festival launched with a unique concert program. Music and literature – the most powerful forms of the art were united on the stage of the Aram Khachaturian Concert Hall. And this unity was even more influential because it was presented by the greatest actor of our days John Malkovich! Accompanied by the orchestra Malkovich performed as a narrator. “Report on the Blind” chapter from Argentine writer Ernesto Sabato’s “On Heroes and Tombs” novel (with Armenian translation on the screen) jointly performed with the Concerto for Piano and Orchestra by Alfred Schnittke. Pianist Anastasya Terenkova performed with the State Youth Orchestra of Armenia. Hollywood legend surprised audience presenting English translation of the expert from the “Book of Lamentations” by Gregory of Narek, while the orchestra performed Symphony “Confession” by Vard Manukyan. The Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of the State Youth Orchestra of Armenia Sergey Smbatyan noted that Malkovich wasn’t supposed to present Armenian literary work. The actor himself wanted to present something by Armenian writers. The organizers of the festival suggested Malkovich to present “Book of Lamentations” by Gregory of Narek, and they were surprised to find out that Malkovich is well aware of the medieval Armenian poet’s and philosopher’s art.
